Overview

The goal of the dual credit program at St. Joseph Christian School is to partner with parents to add support to the educational goals of students by providing a cost effective, efficient means to further their education while protecting the integrity of the school’s mission. To achieve this goal, accountability, strategic planning, and oversight are necessary.

Dual Credit – On Campus/Live Instruction

These are college classes that are taught by our instructors on campus. The classes require various levels of oversight by the college with whom we are partnered for that particular class. The details of this oversight vary from college to college and take into account the education level of our SJCS teachers. We currently offer the following classes in this format

  • Introduction to Chemistry – Mrs. Dudley (MWSU)
    • Requires a Math ACT of 22
  • English Composition – Mrs. Stewart (MBTS)
  • English Composition – Mrs. Stewart (MBTS)
    • Both English courses require an English ACT of 20
  • Statistics/College Algebra
    • Requires a Math ACT of 22 OR a high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 in Math
  • Calculus – Mr. Walters (MWSU)
    • Requires a Math ACT of 25

Enrollment into any of these courses for college credit requires an unweighted GPA of 3.0 and approval by Mr. Miller, Mrs. Phillips, and the parents. The fees vary and are payable directly to the college. For more information about fees and payment, parents and students may contact Mrs. Phillips.

Dual Enrollment – Online Instruction

These are college courses that are entirely online and taught by a college professor to students directly. The prerequisites for these courses vary from course to course and from college to college. Because the course material is provided directly to the student with little to no involvement by SJCS staff, the courses taken by a student in this format must come from Colorado Christian University or Spurgeon College (part of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary). This is subject to change as our society continues to change with the times, sometimes taking our Christian universities with it. We currently offer online dual enrollment courses in the following formats:

Proctored Dual Enrollment Courses

These courses will be proctored by an SJCS staff member and all students enrolled in the class will be in the same classroom, working independently with occasional discussion and interaction as the material and time allows. The SJCS staff member will have access to the grades and class material to provide accountability to the students. Most of these courses will be offered through Colorado Christian University.

Enrollment into these courses for college credit requires an unweighted GPA of 3.0 and approval by Mr. Miller, Mrs. Phillips, and the parents. The fees are payable directly to the college. Students are also responsible for purchasing any books required for the course. For more information about fees and payment, parents and students may contact Mrs. Phillips.

If a student’s schedule does not allow them to work in the same classroom as the other students enrolled in the course, he/she may ask for approval to work on the material during a different time or study hall. This will be evaluated on a case by case basis and will require approval from Mr. Miller, Mrs. Phillips, Mr. Maggart, and parents.

Online Learning Periods

In addition to the online classes listed above, students may choose to take ONE online class from a list provided to us by Colorado Christian University. Students may not enroll in any online, dual credit course that is currently already offered by SJCS.

These courses will run the length of one semester and will be entirely online. Each student will be placed in a study hall/online learning period where he/she will be expected to work independently. If a student fails a course, or the administration is made aware of a situation where a student is not working diligently during this hour, administration will deal with this situation directly with the student and the parents.

Enrollment into any online course for college credit requires an unweighted GPA of 3.0 and approval by Mr. Miller, Mrs. Phillips, and the parents. Students are also responsible for purchasing any books required for the course. For more information about fees and payment, parents and students may contact Mrs. Phillips.

A list of current offerings is available in Mrs. Phillips’ office and may change from year to year.

Cadet Teaching Program

Students with an unweighted GPA of 3.0 may enroll Cadet Teaching I and II for dual credit.

Cadet Teaching I places students into a classroom with a teacher on our campus, giving them hands-on experience in the classroom. Alongside this, the student will concurrently enroll in Education 202 (Introduction to Education) for the entire school year and Education 203 (Participation in Teaching) to log their time in the classroom during the fall, which are online classes through MWSU and collaborated with Mr. Miller.

In addition to the online coursework, students are required to complete a journaling assignment each week that is provided and graded by Mr. Miller. Cadet Teaching II will follow the same format, and students will enroll in Education 150 in the fall (Psychological Development for Children and Adolescents for Educators) and Education 225 in the spring (Educational Psychology).

The online classes will require the student to work independently and correspond with the college professor directly. Students are also responsible for purchasing any books required for the course. For more information about fees and payment, parents and students may contact Mrs. Phillips.

Additionally, it should be noted that these courses are offered through MWSU, a secular university. Parents should be aware that the content will not be filtered through a Biblical worldview.

Fees

Fees are payable directly to the university from which the class is taken. Books are not usually required for classes taught in person on SJCS’s campus but are often required for online courses. The fees for books varies, but usually is close to $100. There are often options available to rent books and to resell purchased books online once the course is completed.

The course fees are listed below and are close to ⅓ of the cost of college courses for full-time college students.

  • Missouri Western State University: $95/credit hour plus any required books
  • Spurgeon College: $350/3-hour class plus any required books
  • Colorado Christian University: $100/credit hour plus any required books

Exceptions and Considerations

  • If a student wishes to take an online dual credit course from a university not listed here, the course and college will be evaluated on a case by case basis by Mrs. Phillips and will require final approval from Mr. Miller, Mrs. Phillips, Mr. Maggart, and the parents. The student will need to fill out an Alternate Course Approval form and turn it in to Mrs. Phillips. (Forms are available in Mrs. Phillips’ office).
  • Dual credit classes are typically limited to juniors and seniors. Sophomore enrollment in any dual credit course will need approval from Mr. Miller, Mrs. Phillips, Mr. Maggart, and parents and require an unweighted GPA of 3.5. Approval forms for sophomores are available in Mrs. Phillips’ office and required for enrollment in any dual credit course.
  • Any situation not addressed here will be reviewed on a case by case basis, at which time these guidelines may be adjusted. Adjustments may also be required as the school grows, the colleges adjust course offerings, and other unforeseen circumstances arise.
