“O come, let us sing unto the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.” ~Psalm 95:1

All students in pre-k through 6th grade have music class twice per week and engage in a program of singing, playing instruments, listening to music, moving to music, and performing music. Experiences in the music classroom are designed to help students learn to read music, understand music terminology, develop rhythm, appreciate various types of music and understand the historical and cultural importance of music. Fifth and sixth grade students also have the option of taking band, where they will be introduced to a band instrument and taught to read and play music.

Music instruction benefits the overall educational experience by strengthening interpersonal skills, cognitive skills, language development, and academic performance. It also provides students with skills they may continue to use throughout life for personal enjoyment, to bless others, and to serve the Lord. At SJCS, the main goal of music instruction is to help students develop their musical talents to worship and glorify the Lord.
